The adventure of public lighting in France and in the City of Metz.
Public lighting, as a means put in place by the authorities to secure public spaces and facilitate travel, appeared in European capitals from the middle of the 17th century. It is a practice that developed in Metz, as in other large provincial towns, from the 18th century and then evolved in parallel with technical innovations. This progression of lighting then leads to a shift in urban life. It requires, on the part of the municipality, organization, new infrastructure and significant expenses.
