SUPERIMPOSITION is an artistic project from the Polisonum collective which studies the subject of listening and sound control. The project is carried out through the meeting of several disciplinary fields, notably sound, data analysis, fashion and visual arts.
SUPERIMPOSITION explores the concept of the earworm, this sound phenomenon which is coercively grafted onto the brain until it becomes a parasite and provokes cognitive control mechanisms. Already known at the end of the 19th century, these phenomena were later defined as “brain worms” by Oliver Sacks. Earworms are linked to mass culture, such as pop music, commercials, video games and television credits. They also inhabit airports, bars, stores, gyms and shopping malls and are characterized by redundant melody sequences that are difficult to escape. Recognizing these mechanisms is complex, due to generally poor or even non-existent listening education.
